Vacilando Quilting Co. is a mobile textile and design studio created and run by Laura Preston.
Her handmade quilts, pillows and canvas goods are inspired by travel, specifically landscapes and memories tied to location, and aim to refresh and modernize the tradition of craft.
Raised in London and Texas by two architect parents, I spent several years in New York City, where I earned a degree in art history and painting and learned the value of perfecting a craft working in high-end coffee and cocktail bars.
In February 2013 I embarked on a year-long road trip around the United States in a 1986 34 foot Airstream trailer. I quickly fell in love with the nomadic lifestyle and have been living, working and traveling in the Airstream ever since.
While on the road, my need for a creative outlet led me to making my first quilt. I was hooked. A year later in February of 2015, Vacilando Quilting Co. was born.
Each piece is designed and handmade in my mobile Airstream studio + home. The changing landscapes I'm surrounded by are a constant inspiration for the colors, shapes and textures of my work. I try and capture that feeling of the freedom of the road and the awe of nature in each piece I create.
I love the duality and nostalgia of quilts - it's one of few household items that lasts for generations, but also a basic necessity that gets used every day. The coziest piece of art and the most useful of heirlooms.
