Are quilts the best option for summer bedding?

You might associate quilts with chilly weather — they’re cozy, comforting, and warm which exactly what you want to snuggle up with when the temperature dips. But did you know that quilts are actually one of the best choices for warm-weather bedding?

Quilts are weighty enough to make you feel comforted while you sleep, but lightweight and breathable enough to keep you cool all night long. Our quilts are made up of three layers: the top and bottom is cotton and/or a linen cotton blend fabric and the center is US-grown cotton batting. Even with those three layers, cotton doesn’t trap heat the way that a down comforter does — it allows air to move freely and wicks moisture and heat away from the body. It creates the perfect layer to sleep under during those hot summer nights, keeping you cool and cozy at the same time.

We’ve had customers rave about how sleeping under a quilt in the summertime has completely changed their life and even given them a better night’s sleep. One customer reported that after she switched out her duvet for her new summer quilt, her Apple Watch reported the quality of her sleep vastly improved. Another customer gushed: “It's the perfect summer bed staple. Our previous blanket setup was too warm but with our quilt now, it's been a Goldilocks moment - just right. Loved every night so far!”

I’ll be honest: I haven’t always been a quilt-on-the-bed kind of person. Blasphemy, I know! But I love the fluffiness of a duvet and I run cold, so give me all the warmth. In the winter on those extra cold nights, I would layer a quilt on top of the duvet, but I never saw quilts as stand-alone bedding.

That all changed a few years ago. It was the beginning of summer and my husband and I we were on the road, traveling across the West Coast in our newly renovated Airstream. One particularly warm night, my husband (who is a hot sleeper) practically begged me to swap out our thick duvet for the only queen size quilt we had with us. It was the second quilt I had ever made — the hand quilting was coming apart, and the dog had chewed huge holes in it, but I obliged and figured it was worth a try.

Well that night’s sleep completely changed my conception of quilts as bedding — it is THE perfect thing to sleep under in the summertime. It’s weighty and comforting and substantial, but the breathability of the cotton kept me (and my hot-blooded husband) the perfect temperature all night long — not too hot and not too cold.

Now, every summer when the nights start getting warmer, I look forward to saying farewell to my duvet and hello to my favorite summer quilt. Which has since been upgraded to something without holes ;)

We wholeheartedly believe that quilts are the best choice for summertime bedding (or anyone who is a hot sleeper!) and are proud to be keeping our customers cool and cozy throughout the warmest months of the year.

If you’re in need of a summer quilt upgrade…
