Why we’re retiring over 70% of our designs
Long story short: We’re retiring over 70% of our made-to-order designs on June 30th. Place an order for these 45 quilt, pillows, wall quilt, and quilt coat designs before they’re gone forever!
Now for the long story…
We retire a few designs every year. Sometimes because it hasn’t sold in a while or wasn’t very popular in the first place, we only had a limited amount of fabric, or we need to make room for new designs. Retiring designs always breaks my heart a little — each and every quilt design I’ve created is so personal to me and represents a very specific and sentimental moment in my life. But I know these designs run their course and part of the creative process involves clearing out and tidying up.
In returning to work after maternity leave this spring, I was able to see Vacilando with fresh eyes. What I saw was a lot of old designs, clutter, and excess in the products that we currently sell. I mean, we still have designs that I created in 2017 — over six years ago! The fabrics we have to keep on hand has also ballooned to over 40 different colors, which is a LOT of fabric to keep in stock for each individual quilter since they’re spread across the country. And after a rough year of business in 2022, I’m feeling a strong urge to strategically scale back and simplify to focus on our strongest pieces as well as custom, one-a-kind work. To create space for what’s next.
The new Core Collection
As I was going through our current catalog of over 60 designs to determine what needed to go, I was surprised by how unsentimentally I moved things to the “retire” pile — which must mean it’s their time to go. By the end of it, I had pared down to our 17 strongest designs — a core collection of 5 quilts, 4 wall quilts, 6 pillows, and 2 quilt coats. That means saying goodbye to a whopping 45 designs. In years past, that would have felt extreme and heartbreaking to say goodbye to so many designs (some of which are my absolute favorite), but it feels like the right time to shake things up and start fresh.
But before we do that, we’re going to celebrate the designs below that we’re saying goodbye to — we’re having a retirement party!
